Colleges join forces on career training

The Rochester area’s three community colleges will use $370,000 from the U.S. Labor Department to create a network in which they jointly offer courses tied to career training and work force development. The goal is to make courses and training related to local industry more easily available to students and job seekers who may live several counties away from the school offering the coursework, said James W. Rochester Institute of Technology will present a program of seasonal classics for the entire family at its annual holiday concert, to be held Saturday, Dec. 13. “Music for the Holidays” will feature multiple ensembles from the RIT music program and the RIT Gospel Ensemble, performing such favorites as Joy to the World, Emmanuel and 12 Days of Christmas. SUNY Geneseo swimmer Jessie Cocco earned All-America honors last season as part of the 200 and 400-yard freestyle relays and 400-yard medley relay teams. MCC foundation recognizes seven for excellence

The Monroe Community College Foundation presented awards to seven individuals Wednesday at the 19th annual Salute to Excellence dinner at the Riverside Convention Center. PAETEC chief executive officer Arunas Chesonis and his wife, Pamela Ann Chesonis, received the Salute to Excellence Award. They were honored for their significant philanthropic support of Monroe Community College. For example, they donated $1.5 million to help pay for the college’s new PAC Center. More...

Monroe County to offer bonus to MCC manufacturing graduates

Monroe County government will offer certain graduates of Monroe Community College a one-time $1,500 bonus if they spend one year working at a local and particular type of manufacturer. The manufacturing employer will also get the bonus, County Executive Maggie Brooks said Wednesday at MCC’s Applied Technologies Center on West Henrietta Road in Brighton. The bonus was announced as part of the county’s plan to fill key manufacturing jobs in the precision manufacturing and optics industries, which are important parts of the county’s 1,000-company manufacturing sector. Brockport student's fall still a mystery

After more than three months of investigating what led to the two-story fall and consequent paralysis of a State University College at Brockport freshman, police say what happened to Bryan C. Parslow on Sept. 5 may forever remain a mystery. But during the investigation, Brockport and SUNY Brockport police officers say they found sufficient evidence to charge six students with a variety of misdemeanor charges, ranging from making a punishable false written statement to the sale of alcohol without a license. MCC president search is on - again

The Monroe Community College board of trustees on Monday announced the makeup of a new committee that will help in the search for a president of the school. Board vice chairman Kenneth G. Goode will serve as chairman of the search committee that will include representatives from the area business community, MCC students, faculty, staff administrators and Monroe County government administrators. The new search committee was appointed by MCC board chairman Richard Guon, who said he had “100 percent agreement from the entire board of trustees.” More...

Geneseo State TV hosts 24-hour benefit to support Invisible Children

The Geneseo chapter of Invisible Children gained a charitable boost this weekend thanks to GSTV’s eighth annual 24-hour telethon on Nov. 20 and 21. The event was held in the ballroom of MacVittie Student Union and allowed students to enter freely and watch the live programming as it happened. “This is great! It’s drawing attention to [Invisible Children], which has had very little attention from the media. Not to mention all great the stuff that GSTV has planned for the day,” said Gwen Hartford, a senior at SUNY Geneseo. More...
